The Bandwagon

So recently I finally jumped on the Trader Joe's bandwagon. I hadn't been with any real regularity but I kept hearing all about it and how great it was. I went a couple of Friday's ago and stocked our freezer with stuff to try. With all the hype I figured that pretty much nothing I chose would let me down. I learned last night that sometimes hype is just hype. I bought two packages of their frozen cheese enchiladas (in the green package, I couldn't find a photo online). I figured these would be a quick easy dinner and if I split the two in the package between myself and Jake and added something healthy on the side it would make for a good meal. Verdict? Bland, bland, bland. Maybe I'm spoiled by the delicious enchiladas they serve at our favorite local restaurants but I expected way more from this product. And I'm even more sad that I bought two without trying them first. I don't usually do that but I was so sure. They weren't terrible and I'm sure Jake will gladly devour the other package for lunch one day next week, but will not be buying them again. I was also a little bummed that the plain white pitas I bought started to mold only a couple of days after I brought them home. I suppose this is a sign of their freshness and their no-preservatives added quality but I hate having to throw food away. In the freezer I still have a package of whole wheat pizza dough, beef stroganoff and some gnocchi to try, hopefully I will fare better with those. Food shopping is such a game of trial and error sometimes and it makes me glad that for the most part I'm not making frozen meals for us.

Hi Karen! I have also had the same experiences with Trader Joe's. So many bloggers go crazy over their stuff and I just don't think it's that great. I have my items that I like from there, including their pizza dough (though Fresh n easy is better), champagne, chocolate covered almonds, balsamic vinegar, veggie burgers and dried mangoes but the vast majority of stuff I've bought from there (esp. the frozen) has just been nasty or overhyped.

I have a new rule about TJ's: I can only try one new-to-me item per trip. That way I don't feel so bad if I don't like it. Their bread and their cheeses go bad really fast too, FYI!

That's a good rule to have! I'll have to keep that in mind. I think I managed to go so long off of the bandwagon because the closest location to me is small and always packed a combination that kinda drives me nuts. At least now I know and my trips there will definitely be infrequent.
