Segovia

The shortest visit on our trip was the 2 or so hours we spent in the old town of Segovia. We drove there from Madrid in about an hour's time. The old walled city and its famous aqueduct are an UNESCO World Heritage Site. (You know how I'm obsessed about those. This trip actually added 4 to my list. It could have been five but we missed a monastery in Madrid somewhere.)

It was a shame our time here was limited but with another 3 or so hours of driving to get to Caceres we toured the city in brief. We wandered our way up into the old city first towards the cathedral which is quite breathtaking.

We followed along the center of the city until we reached the castle. I would have loved to tour it but I knew we were short on time. Jake likes to tour things thoroughly and I didn't want to rush through so we opted for a sit-down lunch in town instead.

As we wandered back we stayed along the city wall this time instead of cutting through the center of town. It offered some nice views along the way.

The city has both Catholic and Jewish heritages and the map we got from the tourist office encouraged visitors to visit some of the Jewish-settled areas of the city. The overall vibe of the city is that there is a rich multi-cultural heritage here and the people seem proud.

So after a lunch of combo plates (mmm... tuna empanadas...) overlooking the main square, we were back in the car and on our way to Caceres, the second walled-city and World Heritage Site of the day. Jake snapped this photo of the castle from the car.
