World Heritage Sites

So as I was researching some of our travel plans for next year I was reminded of the existence of World Heritage Sites. They are chosen based on a specific set of criteria and typically fall into one of three categories, natural, cultural or a combination of the two. Some are also considered in danger. I began scrolling through the list here and realized that although there are so, so many, I've actually been to more than I thought I had. The breakdown goes something like this:

• I have only visited two in the United States, Independence Hall and the redwoods. Update: I completely overlooked Monticello on the list! Apparently the committee appreciates TJ's ingenuity!
• I have been to one in Canada, the historic centre of Old Quebec (which is amazing by the way, I highly recommend a visit!).
• Our honeymoon brought three in Greece, four in Italy plus Vatican City.
• We've been to Ireland twice now and have not seen either of the two in the Republic.
• Our trip up to Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland checked one more off of our list.
• Surprisingly, the archaeological site of Ephesus in Turkey is not on the list but it should be. I should review their criteria to find out why.

So overall I've hit up a dozen thirteen of them, which isn't terrible but I'd like to see more. Our planned trip to Spain and Portugal next spring will probably add one or two more to my list. It's amazing that there are so many, and many that I will likely never see in my lifetime but it does inspire me to want to see more of the world.
