Something I forgot to mention in my brief weekend wrap-up was an interesting compliment (I think compliment) I received on Saturday evening. After the DC United game we stopped at a birthday party for a friend on the way home. I was told that my feet "look like feet should look" meaning I don't have any weird toe things going on. I can't say I've put too much thought into it but I suppose I could agree that I have nice looking feet.
Now getting to the point of this post, sugar. I decided that I really needed to cut down on the amount of sugar I've been eating, and not just in desserts and sweets, in places where it hides more stealthily, like breads, pasta and cereal. For the past year I guess I've been eating Kashi Go Lean Crunch cereal for breakfast. I like its consistency, crunch, texture and not-too-sweet flavor, particularly with fruit added. Actually, the cereal alone is kind of dull to me but adding vanilla almond milk instead of regular milk and some fruit livened it right up for me. I had never really looked at the nutrition label that closely because I didn't figure it was an unhealthy choice. And I'm not saying that it is, however, a single serving has the same grams of sugar as a serving of Apple Jacks (something we had in the pantry for Jake). I was shocked. So I set out to find a new cereal. I spent a good 10 minutes on Saturday morning surveying my options in the cereal aisle at Giant. Plain shredded wheat was a good option but it gets so soggy so quickly as do a number of plain bran and fiber cereals. Then, like a light beaming at me from the bottom shelf I saw it. The bright yellow box hard to mistake with the all important label indicating whole grains. Even better a single serving sugar content of just one gram. My choice was original Cheerios. I wasn't expecting to go back to something so basic and simple but it was the perfect choice for me. I've been enjoying it with blueberries and vanilla almond milk and I feel much better about how much sugar I'm getting from my breakfast cereal.
So, yeah, didn't mean to bore you all with the details of my breakfast routine. If anyone has any other personal suggestions for low-sugar, whole grain cereals I should try, please share them. It would be good to have an alternative to keep things from getting too mondane in the mornings.

Strange. I went through the exact permutations over the last two weeks. I had been using KGLC (with now-jaded emphasis on the GL part) in my greek yogurt. I added a banana for the potassium (and leg-cramp protection) and viola! a sugar bomb I never even knew I was ingesting into this pre-diabetic body. BTW, Men's Health Magazine agrees on the Cheerios, saying if you need sweetness add some raisins.
