So I can be a pretty emotional person sometimes. I will tear up at a lot of things including movies that don't really warrant tears. I try to hide them from Jake lest he think I'm nuts. Of course he wouldn't though. I tend to get emotional sometimes during races. I was pondering this last night as I reviewed the race course for my upcoming marathon. I was reminded that I would probably see some really inspirational people during the course of it and I am hoping I can keep it in check. I think the worst race for this in the DC area, that I've run anyway, is the Army Ten Miler. It is truly a feat of great patriotism from start to finish. Each time I have found I've been brought to tears on several occasions. The worst was this most recent running of it though. As I made my way past a mother-daughter running team, who were wearing shirts in honor of someone who was deployed at the time, (most likely the father/husband) I heard the mother tell the daughter that "there were going to be a lot of really proud daddies in Afghanistan today". Oh my gosh, it was all I could do to keep from crying on the spot after hearing that. Lifetime network (yes I was this channel sometimes, mostly for re-runs of How I Met Your Mother or Will and Grace) has been advertising a new show centered around surprise reunitings (is that a word?) of families with deployed family members. I don't know what makes them think I will be able to watch a show like that when I can't even make it through the commercial without coming to tears! And don't even get me started on the ASPCA commercials set to Sarah McLachlan's music. Jake is kind enough to switch the channel for me because otherwise I'd become a blubbering idiot. Sigh. I can only hope that if emotion hits me during the marathon it will be a distraction from that fact that, oh yeah, I'm going to be running for over 4 1/2 hours.
Note: I borrowed the above image from http://somethinglikethis.net/2008/04/01/upgrading-kleenex/. Kudos to her as she she sewed covers for all the tissue boxes in their house, looks pretty nice if you ask me. Ugly tissue boxes is a huge pet peeve of mine so I'm really glad I stumbled across this site today!
