Ever since we moved out to Reston I have more time for reading on my commute and I have been working my way through a number of books. I never used to read much because I am a slow reader, have a hard time focusing and have floaters in my vision. I seem to have been able to move past these excuses when the book is engaging. It is funny, I have found myself pulled into two very distinct and different genres, young adult dystopian fiction (I know, I know) and WWII period fiction. The book I just finished really stood out from some of the others I have read so I thought I would recommend it.

After coming off of the "high" from my love of The Book Thief, I dove into Guernsey without really remembering what it was supposed to be about. The entire story is told through correspondence between the main character, author Juliet Ashton, and others in her life and some between those other people as well. It provides an amazing description of how life was on the channel islands (of the UK) during their German occupation during WWII through recounts by persons living on the island of Guernsey. All the while this group of people who surprisingly grew together during the occupation are further developing their relationships through attempts at the return to normalcy. And yes, there is definitely some romance but it is not overly gushing which I found refreshing.
I found some talk online about a movie but I don't think that one has actually been under production as of yet. The latest is that Michelle Dockery of Downton Abbey fame will play Juliet Aston. That I would definitely go and see.
